Study Abroad/Study Away
Students who study abroad and take advantage of the opportunities to learn in different parts of the country or across the globe will tell you that their semester, year or summer program had an enormous impact on the person they become during their college years—it’s often the time of their favorite memories too! Talk early and often with your academic advisor, your SEES faculty, and the Center for Global Engagement (for study abroad) to learn about the opportunities most suited to your goals. Funding may also be available through financial aid or scholarships such as the Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships and Critical Language Scholarship (CLS). The US government programs including the competitive Boren and Gilman awards, provide funding to support time studying and working/interning abroad. You may also want to consider a post-baccalaureate opportunity such a Fulbright Award, teaching English in the schools of another country, studying or doing research at a foreign University or Institute.
Study Abroad (Baylor faculty-led)
Memory, Culture & Identity in Prague. SEES-affiliate faculty member, Dr. Adrienne Harris directs a cultural immersion study abroad program that explores the rich, multiethnic history of Prague, a crossroad of Europe. Topics of study may include the Prague’s origins and medieval period; how religious history has shaped Prague throughout history, the Hapsburgs and German communities, Czech National Revival, the Holocaust and WWII, Communism in Prague and post-communism developments in the Czech Republic. Contact Dr. Harris for more information.
Baylor in Germany-The Dresden Experience. SEES-affiliate faculty member, Dr. Jennifer L Good, directs a cultural and German language study summer program focused on the history of the city of Dresden, first mentioned in historical records in 1206. Dresden originated as a Slavonic settlement named Drezdzany, meaning "Forest Dwellers on the Plain” and developed as a major cultural and economic center as the capital and royal residence of the Electors and Kings of Saxony, and the Polish Wettin Dynasty from 1697-1763. Dresden has deep artistic, social and political relationships in both Central and Eastern Europe over centuries; contemporary Dresden bears witness to the 19th and early 20th Century, the horrors of Nazism, the Soviet Occupation in 1945, forty years of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) and the trials and triumphs of unification with the Federal Republic of Germany in 1990. This faculty-led study abroad considers how history has shaped and continues to shape Dresdners and this region of the Elbe River valley. Contact Dr. Good for more information.
