Language Studies

Language study at the university level is highly valuable and essential to disciplines of area studies. The Department of Modern Language and Cultures (MLC) and specialized SEES language and cultural offerings provide language options and instruction. SEES students also take advantage of study abroad and study away opportunities through Baylor or other organizations. Baylor students have been successful applying for prestigious programs such as the Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships and Critical Language Scholarships (CLS). Additional programs that SEES faculty are familiar with and recommend may be found on the SEES study abroad and study away page.

Russian Baylor University offers Russian language & culture courses, as well as a major, secondary major and minor.
German Baylor University offers German language & culture courses, as well as major, secondary major and minor.
Czech SEES began offering Czech language and culture courses in Spring 2023. Introduction to Czech SEES 2V70 Czech Language & Culture SEES 3v70

Additional language and culture courses may be offered based on faculty availability and demonstrated student interest. Talk with the SEES Director or your SEES faculty member if you have a specific language in mind.

Credit by Exam (CBE) If you know a SEES-related language not offered by Baylor University, you may be eligible for Credit by Exam (CBE). CBE may be used to meet prerequisites for advanced classes (Russian) or to satisfy degree requirements in the same way as credit earned by passing courses.

The language requirement for Arts & Sciences, as well as the language requirement of the SEES major and secondary major, may be fulfilled by any of the languages of the SEES regions including the following countries (alphabetical order): Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria. Bosnia-Hercegovina, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Georgia, Germany, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan.

For information on Credit by Exam (CBE) with regard to the SEES major or secondary major, or a language within the SEES region, please contact Dr. Jennifer L. Good, Director of Slavic and East European Studies.
